[001] - abcm2ps 4.9.1 (Development)
by Guido Gonzato (http://freshmeat.net/users/goccia/)
Thu, Mar 17th 2005 00:18
Printing
About: abcm2ps is a package that converts music tunes from ABC format to
PostScript. Based on abc2ps version 1.2.5, it was developed mainly to
print baroque organ scores that have independant voices played on one or
more keyboards, and a pedal-board. It introduces many extensions to the
ABC language that make it suitable for classical music.
Changes: Lyrics are now closer to the staff. A "lyrics=up|down|auto"
option was added to the V: field. Minor bugs were fixed.

Information Management
About: Ampache is a Web-based MP3/Ogg/RM/Flac/WMA/M4A manager. It allows
you to view, edit, and play your audio files via HTTP/IceCast/Mpd or
Moosic. It has support for downsampling, playlists, artist, and album
views, album art, random play, song play tracking, and remote catalogs
using XML-RPC.
Changes: Localplay through moosic and mpd has been improved. A Web-based
installer that can insert the database and create the config file is now
included. Creation of ASX playlists and and support for comments over
255chr has been added. The User page now follows the same paging rules
that artist/ album pages do and can be sorted. Additional information can
now be pulled during a catalog build based on the filename/directory
pattern. Logging has been vastly improved, and many other minor bugs have
been fixed.

by Jay Beale (http://freshmeat.net/users/armitage/)
Thu, Mar 17th 2005 04:28
Security
About: Bastille Linux aims to be the most comprehensive, flexible, and
educational Security Hardening Program for Red Hat (Fedora Core,
Enterprise Linux, and original Red Hat), SuSE, Gentoo, Mandrake, and
Debian Linux, as well as HP-UX and Mac OS X. Virtually every task it
performs is optional, providing immense flexibility. It educates the
installing admin regarding the topic at hand before asking any question.
The interactive nature allows the program to be more thorough when
securing, while the educational component produces an admin who is less
likely to compromise the increased security.
Changes: A show-stopper bug in the less-used text-based interface was
corrected.

Printing
About: The Big Faceless PDF Library is a Java class library for creating
PDF documents. The Extended Edition offers the ability to create and edit
AcroForms, PDF's answer to the HTML form. Like HTML forms, PDF forms can
contain text boxes, radio buttons, and can call JavaScript functions. The
Extended Edition also includes a PDF reader for importing and editing,
along with FDF support and verification for Digital Signatures. Both
variations offer full Unicode support, encryption, embedded TrueType and
Type1 fonts, barcodes, hyperlinks, spot and calibrated color. Advanced
text layout engine enables complex HTML styles. It is small, fast, easy to
use, and 100% pure Java.
Changes: A memory leak involving ICC profiles, which are sometimes
embedded in images, has been fixed. This is unlikely to affect many users,
and at a typical 5k per affected PDFImage it's not a big leak, but if
you've been seeing leaks then please upgrade. The Form.flatten() method
has been modified to produce smaller PDF files (sometimes considerably
smaller). Synchronized block around ICC profile extraction has been added
to work around Sun JRE bug 4863795. The performance hit should be
negligable.

by constans (http://freshmeat.net/users/constans/)
Thu, Mar 17th 2005 11:37
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Editors
Scientific/Engineering
Text Processing :: Markup :: TeX/LaTeX
About: cb2Bib is a tool for rapidly extracting unformatted bibliographic
references from email alerts, journal Web pages, and PDF files. It
facilitates the capture of single references from unformatted sources.
References are written in BibTeX. A PDF file with the article text, if
available, can be easily linked and renamed by dragging it onto the
cb2Bib window. Reference manager applications can later retrieve,
import, and display these BibTeX references.
Changes: Leading and tailing blanks in BibTeX field strings are removed.
This fixes compatibility issues, e.g. browsing through DOI's in JabRef.
Inverted commas as BibTeX delimiters are also considered. Postprocessing
of the 'pages' field is improved. This solves some issues while extracting
from poor quality PDFs. About ten more Unicode to LaTeX translations has
been added.

[009] - Conary 0.50.4
by Michael K. Johnson (http://freshmeat.net/users/johnsonm/)
Thu, Mar 17th 2005 05:08
Software Development :: Version Control
System :: Archiving :: Packaging
System :: Installation/Setup
About: Conary is a distributed software management system for Linux
distributions. It replaces traditional package management solutions (such
as RPM and dpkg) with one designed to enable loose collaboration across
the Internet. It enables sets of distributed and loosely connected
repositories to define the components which are installed on a Linux
system. Rather than having a full distribution come from a single vendor,
it allows administrators and developers to branch a distribution, keeping
the pieces which fit their environment while grabbing components from
other repositories across the Internet.
Changes: Rollbacks now take much less time and space when installing,
updating, and erasing. Architecture definition has been expanded. The new
:debuginfo component infrastructure now works properly. Several shadow
merging bugs were fixed. Conary now has many default values for macros and
architectures that can be overridden and expanded by distributions, instead
of relying on the distribution for all settings. Compiling sources is now a
little bit faster. A simple interface for populating bugzilla components
from Conary repositories has been added.

Thu, Mar 17th 2005 05:35
Database
Database :: API
Database :: Database Engines/Servers
About: db4o is an object database available for Java and for .NET,
including CompactFramework and Mono. Features include ACID transactions,
automatic class schema recognition, query-by-example, S.O.D.A. object
querying API, callback methods, memory files, cascade-on-delete,
multi-threaded access, and Java Webstart and servlet support.
Changes: This release is built with a new Java-To-C# converter to produce
C# sources (for Mono and .NET) with a clean format and using the same
variable names as the Java sources. Another change for this release is a
complete refactoring of all reflection calls to make the reflection
interface pluggable. Your own reflection plugins can be written for
usecases such as: using your own dynamic type system, running refactorings
in the reflector, translating objects in the reflector, building interfaces
to other programming languages, or turning db4o into a native XML database.

[016] - findutils 4.2.20
by James Youngman (http://freshmeat.net/users/jyoungman/)
Thu, Mar 17th 2005 05:26
System :: Systems Administration
About: The findutils package consists of three programs. `find' is a
program which searches a directory tree to find a file or group of files.
It walks the directory tree and reports all occurences of a file matching
the user's specifications. `locate' scans one or more databases of
filenames and displays any matches. `xargs' builds and executes command
lines by gathering together arguments it reads on the standard input. Most
often, these arguments are lists of file names generated by `find'.
Changes: find should no longer hang on systems which lack the O_NOFOLLOW
flag to open(2) and which are clients of an unresponsive NFS server. "find
-L foo" or "find -H foo" now succeeds even if foo is a symbolic link
instead of failing with the error message "Too many levels of symbolic
links". Other small fixes were made.

Thu, Mar 17th 2005 22:38
Communications
Internet
System
About: GNU VPE creates a virtual ethernet by creating host-to-host
tunnels between multiple endpoints. Unlike other virtual private
"network" solutions which merely create a single tunnel, it creates a
real network with multiple endpoints. It is designed to be very simple
and easy to setup. It can also be used to tunnel into some VPN network
using a variety of protocols. It is, however, primarily designed to sit
on the gateway machines of company branches to connect them together.
Changes: This release further cleans up the documentation, by documenting
the formerly undocumented icmp transport protocol and describing the
transport protocols in more detail in the gvpe.protocol manpage. It also
updates (and documents) the tinc device driver interfaces. Experimental
DNS tunneling support has been added and an exemption to allow binary
redistributions of gvpe linked against OpenSSL has been added to COPYING.

About: SkProd provides a way of building binary data for applications.
SkProd has been historically developed for publishing tools. However, it
can potentially be used for any application that needs some data to be
compiled. The SkProd language emphasizes data flows. Instead of using
imperative commands like if/for/while, a SkProd program describes how to
produce data streams, and what operations (filters) should be applied on
those data streams. Therefore, a typical SkProd program is not a sequence
of functions, but rather is a tree whose roots are the input data streams,
and whose leaves are the output data streams.

Software Development :: Code Generators
Software Development :: Compilers
About: Stunnix JS-Obfus protects your JavaScript code from potential
analyzing/studying/reworking by unwanted parties. It's both an obfuscator
and encoder for the JavaScript/JScript source code. It converts the
JavaScript/JScript source files into highly mangled and obfuscated form,
making it extremely difficult to study, analyse, reuse, and re-work for
competitors or customers, while fully retaining functionality of the
original source code, and then encodes it afterwards, making it completely
unreadable. There are a lot of options to control all aspects of code
hiding, and full support for all syntax constructs. It is designed to be
multi-module aware.
Changes: New in this version are great improvements in Project Manager
(like switching profiles for protecting code or profiles for mangling HTML
markup and comments in a couple of clicks), the ability to transform
comments (e.g. replace all non-white characters with 'x'), a feature to
keep line numbers of protected files the same as in the original ones,
keeping banners and injected scripts below the DOCTYPE declaration in
files containing HTML markup, support for scripts in SVG, and improved
support for some JavaScript syntax constructs.

About: VMD (Visual Molecular Dynamics) is designed for the visualization
and analysis of biological systems such as proteins, nucleic acids, lipid
bilayer assemblies, etc. It may be used to view more general molecules, as
VMD can read standard Protein Data Bank (PDB) files and display the
contained structure. VMD provides a wide variety of methods for rendering
and coloring a molecule: simple points and lines, CPK spheres and
cylinders, licorice bonds, backbone tubes and ribbons, cartoon drawings,
and others. VMD can be used to animate and analyze the trajectory of a
molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. In particular, VMD can act as a
graphical front end for an external MD program by displaying and animating
a molecule undergoing simulation on a remote computer.
Changes: This release feaures multiple structure alignment, sequence
alignment, phylogenetic tree display, high-quality shading with OpenGL
shading language support, new APBS electrostatic potential plugin,
particle mesh ewald potential map plugin, new cartoon secondary structure
representation, solvent accessible surface area calculations, coloring by
volumetric datasets, and much more.

Software Development
About: wingS is a servlet development framework for Web applications. It
features Swing-like components and utilizes Swing models, Swing events,
and a very similar API. A special LayoutManager allows you to place
components using designer provided HTML templates. The HTML code
generation of the components themself supports PLAF (Pluggable Look and
Feel), so it is possible to create a different output, like plain HTML,
HTML+CSS, and WML.
Changes: This release featured CGs implemented in Java, a new JDK 1.5-like
component popup menu, and server-side key event listeners and suppression
of default bindings. WingSet now includes Dynamic Layout examples. PLaF
for Gecko is nearing completion, but PLaf for IE remains to be done. dwr
integration was implemented for server-side formatters and dynamic models.
Focus management was added and JSP integration was improved. A structure
and design separation was achieved using HTML and CSS. TreeCG,
TabbedPaneCG, TableCG, MenuCG, and all Button subclasses were rewritten.
Support for preferred sizes was added. The layout managers were rewritten.

[069] - zsync 0.3.1
by Colin Phipps (http://freshmeat.net/users/cph/)
Thu, Mar 17th 2005 13:51
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
About: zsync is a client-side implementation of the rsync algorithm. It
allows updating of files from a remote Web server without requiring a
full download or a special remote server application. It uses a metafile,
which must be created on the server, to determine which parts of a file
the user already has; it then downloads the remaining parts via HTTP. No
special server or Web server module is needed. It can also look inside
gzip files, allowing efficient update transfers even when files are
compressed.
Changes: Failure to complete downloads of some uncompressed files has
beenfixed, as well as other minor bugs.
