[001] - arpwatch NG DROP4.1
  by Freek (http://freshmeat.net/users/thefreek/)
  Fri, Mar 18th 2005 05:49

System :: Networking :: Monitoring

About: The arpwatch NG package contains arpwatch and arpsnmp. Both
utilities monitor Ethernet or FDDI network traffic and build databases of
Ethernet/IP address pairs, and can report certain changes. It is based
upon the original, but old, arpwatch package.

Changes: Non-GNU systems are missing strndup() and were therefore unable
to compile. configure now checks for strndup() and activates a replacement
function if necessary.

[003] - Bastille Linux 2.2.4
  by Jay Beale (http://freshmeat.net/users/armitage/)
  Fri, Mar 18th 2005 10:28

Security

About: Bastille Linux aims to be the most comprehensive, flexible, and
educational Security Hardening Program for Red Hat (Fedora Core,
Enterprise Linux, and original Red Hat), SuSE, Gentoo, Mandrake, and
Debian Linux, as well as HP-UX and Mac OS X. Virtually every task it
performs is optional, providing immense flexibility. It educates the
installing admin regarding the topic at hand before asking any question.
The interactive nature allows the program to be more thorough when
securing, while the educational component produces an admin who is less
likely to compromise the increased security.

Changes: This release has substantial internal changes, so much so that it
is called the 2.2.x tree. This transitions the 2.2.x code to a stable
release. Outside of the internal changes, a bit more content has been
added, including a question to configure the Linux Auditing System (LaUS).

  Fri, Mar 18th 2005 23:21

Database
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries

About: Generator is an command line application written in java that have
the goal to make easy the construction of little applications that needs
some database objects stuff. It isn't a replacement of complex object
persistence solutions, like hibernate or TopLink but it covers a different
target. The little java web applications that dont' use sofisticated
persistence options. Generator invocation is simple, just type java -jar
generator.jar -xml where config-file is a xml config file with the
definitions to connect to the database and generate the bean classes.

Changes: This release added output of the actual database structure (for
future offline generation). A flag was added to the config file for
updating only dirty fields individually. Table definitions can now be in
separate XML files included by the main file. A random serialVersionUID is
now created for the generated classes, and default serialVersionUIDs were
added for core classes. Better JavaDoc is provided in generated classes. A
lot of STDOUT debug output was eliminated, and the MySQL/J Connector was
updated to version 3.1.7.

  Fri, Mar 18th 2005 23:13

Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries
Software Development :: Object Brokering

About: A lightweight Java client/server component built to send and
receive objects through pluggable (de)serialization mechanisms. It offers
a high-performance, simple, and clean object request broker (whereby ORB
is meant in its natural manner and not in its relation with CORBA), with
server and client components for your client/server applications. Similar
to RMI, it supports remote class loading to avoid redundant classpath
entries, but doesn't require stubs and/or proxy objects.

Changes: The component now supports persistent connections and handles
SerializeAdapters per client request, so clients can automatically tell
the server which SerializeAdapter is required. XStream is now the default
(de)serialization mechanism. New adapters for Castor and JavaBeans
standard XmlEncoder/XmlDecoder were added. The compression level is now
adjustable. Caching features were added to remote class loading.

  by Gerhard Rieger (http://freshmeat.net/users/rieger/)
  Fri, Mar 18th 2005 16:37

About: Socat is a relay for bidirectional data transfer between two
independent data channels. Each of these data channels may be a file,

TCP), a client for SOCKS4, proxy CONNECT, or SSL, etc. It provides forking,
logging, and dumping, different modes for interprocess communication, and
many more options. It can be used, for example, as a TCP relay (one-shot
or daemon), as a daemon-based socksifier, as a shell interface to Unix
sockets, as an IP6 relay, for redirecting TCP-oriented programs to a
serial line, or to establish a relatively secure environment (su and

[072] - tenshi 0.3.3
  by Andrea Barisani (http://freshmeat.net/users/lcars/)
  Fri, Mar 18th 2005 05:48

System :: Monitoring

About: tenshi (formerly wasabi) is a log monitoring program designed to
watch a log file for lines matching user defined regular expressions and
report on the matches. The regular expressions are assigned to queues that
have an alert interval and a list of mail recipients. Queues can be set to
send a notification as soon as there is a log line assigned to them, or to
send periodic reports. Additionally, uninteresting fields in the log lines
(such as PID numbers) can be masked with the standard regular expression
grouping operators ( ). This allows cleaner and more readable reports. All
reports are separated by hostname and all messages are condensed when
possible.

Changes: This release fixes whitespace-only line handling in the
configuration file and adds a configuration check mode and a checkconfig
target to the init scripts.

[083] - Zombie SMTP 1.0

About: Zombie SMTP is a tool written to help interrupt spammers'
activity. It pretends to be an SMTP server but all it really does is hold
onto a connection for 20 mins if the source IP address of the connection
is registered in one or more of the pre-defined RBLs. The purpose of this
is to simply waste spammers' time if they try to connect to Zombie SMTP to
relay their spam. Any connection from a machine not listed in the RBLs is
automatically disconnected, this is to prevent authentic servers from
tying up their resources who for some reason try to connect to this SMTP
server.
