[001] - abcm2ps 4.9.6 (Development)
by Guido Gonzato (http://freshmeat.net/users/goccia/)
Wed, Apr 27th 2005 03:53
Printing
About: abcm2ps is a package that converts music tunes from ABC format to
PostScript. Based on abc2ps version 1.2.5, it was developed mainly to
print baroque organ scores that have independant voices played on one or
more keyboards, and a pedal-board. It introduces many extensions to the
ABC language that make it suitable for classical music.
Changes: Minor layout bugs were corrected.

About: The abcMIDI suite consists of programs for turning ABC music files
into MIDI and vice versa, typesetting them as PostScript files, and
manipulate them in several ways.
Changes: This release introduces two more MIDI commands: "%%MIDI
portamento n" and "%%MIDI noportamento". The utility 'abcmatch' is now
part of the abcMIDI package.

by Scott Robert Ladd (http://freshmeat.net/users/ChaoticCoyote/)
Wed, Apr 27th 2005 12:59
Software Development :: Testing
About: Acovea implements a genetic algorithm for finding the "best"
options for compiling programs with the GCC C and C++ compilers. "Best",
in this context, is defined as those options that produce the fastest
executable program from a given source code. The framework can be extended
to other programming languages and non-GCC compilers. It is also useful for
testing combinations of flags for pessimistic interactions, and for testing
the reliability of the compiler.
Changes: This release adds improved statistical analysis, a new GUI
frontend, automatic comparison of evolved solutions with baselines, and
support for Makefiles.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: HTTP Servers
About: Apache::Logmonster is a tool to collect log files from multiple
Apache Web servers, split them based on the virtual host, sort the logs
into chronological order, and then pipe them into a log file analyzer of
your choice (Webalizer, http-analyze, AWstats, etc).
Changes: In this release, users can select a stats processor for each
virtual host. There is now a test to make sure the log file exists before
trying to compress it (suppresses spurious warnings). If vhosts are all in
a directory, it now skips any files that end with ~ (vim) or .bak (user).
The code that hashed the domain list now works regardless of order
declarations appear in the vhost container. Apache::Logmonster::Perl was
added to the distribution.

[010] - basE91 0.4.0
by Joachim Henke (http://freshmeat.net/users/johe/)
Wed, Apr 27th 2005 09:36
Communications :: Email
Internet
System :: Archiving
About: basE91 is an advanced method for converting binary data to ASCII
text. It is similar to UUencode or base64, but is much more efficient. The
overhead produced by basE91 amounts at most to 23% (compare to 33% with
base64). Under some rare circumstances (for example, on 0-byte blocks), it
does a real 8-bit to 7-bit conversion, resulting in an overhead of only
14%. This makes it very useful for sending larger files over binary
insecure connections like email or terminal lines.
Changes: The encoder handles stream ends more effectively (it can save one
byte sometimes), and buffer memory is allocated dynamically now. "make
check" was implemented to verify correct behavior of builds.

About: Java PathFinder is a system to verify executable Java bytecode
programs. In its basic form, it is a Java Virtual Machine (JVM) that is
used as an explicit state software model checker, systematically exploring
all potential execution paths of a program to find violations of properties
like deadlocks or unhandled exceptions. Unlike traditional debuggers, it
reports the whole execution path that leads to a defect. It is especially
suitable to find hard-to-test concurrency defects in multithreaded

[064] - Peeranha42 1.0.2 (Peeranha42)
by eecid (http://freshmeat.net/users/eecid/)
Wed, Apr 27th 2005 08:54
About: Peeranha42 is an all-in-one software solution for P2P networks. The
software consists of two components, the P42 Client and the P42 Development
Kit. The client is the core of the software package and has a special
pluggable architecture. Furthermore, it builds up the interface between
the P2P network of JXTA and plugins using P2P networks. Due to the fact
that developing a P2P application is generally much harder and time
expensive than developing a simple client-server application, the client
offers an abstract network layer for easy development of P2P applications
in the form of P42 Plugins in minimum time. Some plugins are available for
download.
Changes: Bugfixes were made for group creation. Multiple receivers are now
supported (one for each group). Bugfixes were made to Network, PluginGroup,
and RegisteredReceiver.

[079] - rearview 0.3.0
by Johannes Hanika (http://freshmeat.net/users/jhanika/)
Wed, Apr 27th 2005 11:12
Multimedia :: Graphics :: 3D Rendering
About: Rearview is a three dimensional computer graphics engine which fits
both human perception and the shape of the real world better than common
polygon renderers do. It is not meant to be a very sharp-shaped,
high-contrast engine. Rearview's strength are grown things, dirty things,
and bumpy things, like smooth hills and old walls. To achieve this,
rearview uses a raytracing algorithm to visualise voxels stored in an
octree.
Changes: This release has a reworked ray algorithm. HDRI are read in cross
format. Voxel edges are smoothed. The image sampling has been improved.
There are several types of cameras available that can do
non-photo-realistic stroke rendering, motion blur or nightvision glow, and
depth of field in real time. Shader definitions are read from the XML map
file, which supports loading of .3ds and .ply files. The ability to remove
and add shapes to the voxel tree interactively has been added. The build
system has been ported to autotools, and the AMD-64 architecture is
supported.

Wed, Apr 27th 2005 02:34
Communications
Communications :: Chat
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
About: ShoutChat allows developers to add an instant message (or IRC) like
shout box to Web sites. The shoutchat is an iframe element (Mozilla
compatible), and the script operates using Javascript and stores the
messages in a MySQL database (a file gets complicated with synchronous
posts, so a database was favored). The look of the box is controlled
through styles. All the modern browsers are supported (including
Konqueror). In order to act more like an instant chat, it handles some of
the details that other shout boxes do not. It uses Javascript head
requests to check for new messages, refreshing the iframe and scrolling
down to the new message when one is detected. Several IRC features are
included, such as channels. Finally, a text formatting engine called
FastFormat code is used to decorate text and create special links.
Changes: This release migrates the project to the new name "ShoutChat". It
splits the database tables into two, one for shouts and one for channels.
Several outstanding database field mappings that prevented shouts from
being posted were fixed.

by Stunnix (http://freshmeat.net/users/stunnix/)
Wed, Apr 27th 2005 11:18
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: HTTP Servers
About: Stunnix Perl Web Server is an advanced Web server developed for
writing browser-based applications and database-driven catalogues or
presentations that reside on CDROM or DVD, internally implemented as
Perl-driven or PHP-driven Web sites that store data in a database also
located on CDROM. It produces a single CD that works on Windows, Mac OS X,
and Linux/x86, without requiring any additional software on the user's
computer. All an author needs to do to build a cross-platform
browser-based application or CDROM is to copy scripts to their proper
directories. HTML::Mason and mod_perl-like execution modes are supported
for Perl-driven Web sites.
Changes: This version adds support for running PHP and MySQL driven Web
sites, and Perl DBI and DBD drivers for accessing MySQL and SQLite
databases on all major desktop platforms. Binaries of MySQL server, PHP
interpreter, and Perl DB drivers for these platforms are provided for
placing on a CD-ROM; they will be executed directly from the CD-ROM
automatically when it is run. A sample CD-ROM (as a template) with a

sparse matrices. They all feature a similar interface. TBCI comes with an
extensive set of solvers for linear systems and an interface to lapack
libraries. It uses the temporary base class idiom, which avoids
unnecessary copying of data by having a notion of real and temporary
objects which are treated differently with respect to assignment and copy
c'tor.
Changes: This release features major performance enhancements. The most
significant step ahead is the use of SSE2 SIMD instructions. They provide
up to twice the performance on some CPUs (P4); they have been coded using
intrinsics and are supported on x86 and x86-64 with gcc(3.3+) and icc(8+).
Some small improvements have been also been done. For simple types it's
normally better to pass values rather than (const) references and
sometimes local variables are used over data members. The prefetching
default settings have been tuned a bit better. The code has undergone
minor cleanups as well.
