[008] - Big Faceless PDF Library 2.4
by Big Faceless Organization (http://freshmeat.net/users/faceless/)
Thu, Apr 28th 2005 11:42
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Presentation
Office/Business
Printing
About: The Big Faceless PDF Library is a Java class library for creating
PDF documents. The Extended Edition offers the ability to create and edit
AcroForms, PDF's answer to the HTML form. Like HTML forms, PDF forms can
contain text boxes, radio buttons, and can call JavaScript functions. The
Extended Edition also includes a PDF reader for importing and editing,
along with FDF support and verification for Digital Signatures. Both
variations offer full Unicode support, encryption, embedded TrueType and
Type1 fonts, barcodes, hyperlinks, spot and calibrated color. Advanced
text layout engine enables complex HTML styles. It is small, fast, easy to
use, and 100% pure Java.
Changes: This release adds support for multiple signatures. Documents that
have already been signed can now have further signatures added to them
without invalidating the first signatures. As many as are required can be
added, provided the PDF is rendered between them. Although still API
compatible with 2.3.7, this is a fairly large change, so it has been
marked as 2.4.

[011] - Cake/PHP framework 0.2.9
by Pies (http://freshmeat.net/users/pies/)
Thu, Apr 28th 2005 02:01
Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks
About: Cake is an Model-View-Controller framework (a structure of
libraries, classes, and run-time infrastructure) for PHP, based on Ruby on
Rails. It features CRUD (Create-Read-Update-Delete) for database access,
and simplified querying so you shouldn't need to write SQL for basic
operations. It has a request dispatcher with custom URLs, fast and
flexible templating, and works from a Web site subdirectory with very
little Apache configuration involved (requires .htaccess files and
mod_rewrite to work)
Changes: Bake now works better but can still cause some problems.
scripts/add.php now includes the correct basics library and no longer
generates unnecessary HTTP headers with PHP4. A problem where the
controller didn't use it's default model when none was specified was
fixed. A new select_tag() form generator was added. An issue with
Model::find_all generating buggy SQL due to the experimental one-to-many
relations was fixed.

About: Conary is a distributed software management system for Linux

as RPM and dpkg) with one designed to enable loose collaboration across
the Internet. It enables sets of distributed and loosely connected
repositories to define the components which are installed on a Linux
system. Rather than having a full distribution come from a single vendor,
it allows administrators and developers to branch a distribution, keeping
the pieces which fit their environment while grabbing components from
other repositories across the Internet.

Thu, Apr 28th 2005 06:26
Software Development
Utilities
About: The Erwin library is a data structure template library for C and
C++. To avoid the C++ template mechanism, a Perl script generates C files
that are compiled into a library. It can be included in other libraries or
in applications. The implemented data types are vectors (dynamic arrays)
and lists, both of arbitrary element types, and hash tables (maps) of
arbitrary key and value types. The implementation is very efficient and
also provides a sophisticated, easy-to-learn interface with a lot of
useful functions.
Changes: A problem in which Vectors, Maps, and Lists did not set their
_errno value when copying NULL was fixed. Maps did not copy NULL at all.
The code generator was extended a bit. Maps creating pointer values on the
fly can now still be nicely indexed with [] in C++. Some more "const"
members that were missing have been added.

[045] - msort 7.0
by Bill Poser (http://freshmeat.net/users/billposer/)
Thu, Apr 28th 2005 11:44
Text Processing
Utilities
About: msort is a program for sorting files in sophisticated ways. It
differs from typical sort utilities in providing greater flexibility in
parsing the input into records and identifying key fields and greater
control over the sort order. Records need not be single lines of text but
may be delimited in a number of ways. Key fields may be selected either by
position or by tag. For each key an arbitrary sort order may be specified.
The sort order may contain multigraphs. In addition to the usual
lexicographic and numerical orderings, msort supports sorting by date,
time, and string length. Any or all keys may be optional. For optional
keys, the user may specify how records missing the key field should
compare to records in which the key field is present.
Changes: This release adds a graphical user interface which, it is hoped,
both overcomes the difficulties of using a complex command line interface
and provides assistance in the finer points of sorting. The GUI is a
separate program which CLI users may ignore. There are also some minor
improvements in the underlying program, including the addition of a
case-folding option and the addition of support for ISO8601 date/time
combinations.

mupo-files. You can use it on an Agenda PDA, Compaq iPaq, or on a PC
running Linux or Windows.
Changes: This release features some little changes to make compiler
warnings disappear, and a quick hack to navigate a list and toggle items
using PageUp, PageDown, Up, Down, Left, and Right keys. The date of
'Superbowl Sunday' was corrected, and an error which led to not being able

About: plptools is a set of libraries and utilities for enabling Unix
(mainly Linux) systems to communicate with a Psion palmtop over a serial
line. On Linux, a connection over IrDA using the IrCOMM feature is also
possible. The following (console-based) tools are part of the package:
plpbackup, a command-line backup program. plpftp, a FTP-like frontend
with some extensions. sisinstall, a SIS package installer. plpnfsd, a
daemon providing the Psion's file services via an NFS-mounted directory.
and plpprintd, a print server for printing via a PC. It also includes the
KDE 2/3 program kio_plp, a KIOslave which adds a new protocol "psion:/"
to the list of known protocols of KDE's generic I/O library. This
enables all KDE applications to deal with files on a Psion. There is a

[059] - Redet 6.1
by Bill Poser (http://freshmeat.net/users/billposer/)
Thu, Apr 28th 2005 02:06
Text Processing :: Linguistic
About: Redet (Regular Expression Development and Execution Tool) is a tool
for developing and executing regular expressions using any of more than 20
search programs, editors, and programming languages. For each program in
each locale a palette showing the available regular expression constructs
is provided. The features of each program are determined by running a test
suite, which guarantees that they will be correct for the particular
program version in use and for the user's locale. The locale may be
changed without exiting Redet. Selections from the palette may be copied
to the regular expression window with a mouse click. Definitions can be
added to the palette via an initialization file. The regular expressions
executed are recorded in a history list, from which entries may be copied
to the regular expression window with a mouse click. This allows complex
regular expressions to be developed in pieces. When a suitable regular
expression has been constructed it may be saved to a file. Named character
classes may be defined in a file or entered interactively. As long as the
underlying program supports Unicode, Redet fully supports UTF-8 Unicode.
Changes: This release contains a number of small improvements. Several
windows that lacked them now have optional scrollbars. Widgets have been
added for searching the input data and results and for entering
International Phonetic Alphabet characters. The last five results are
stored. A new widget allows them to be saved to files or compared with
each other. The various configuration and log files have been
rationalized. Support was added for Judoscript and Sleep. Several minor
bugs were fixed.

[067] - the breve simulation environment 2.2.1
by jklein (http://freshmeat.net/users/jklein/)
Thu, Apr 28th 2005 11:14
Scientific/Engineering :: Artificial Intelligence
About: breve is a 3D simulation environment designed for the simulation of
decentralized systems and artificial life. While the concept is similar to
existing packages such as Swarm and StarLogo, the implementation, which
simulates both continuous time and continuous 3D space, is quite
different. It also includes an experimental physics engine, allowing the
user to implement real-time physical simulations. Simulations are written
in a simple object-oriented language called "steve". Users define an
agent's behavior by specifying how the agent interacts with the world at
each timestep and how the agent interacts when it collides with other
agents. The ultimate goal of the system is to allow decentralized
simulations to be implemented quickly and easily while providing a
sophisticated set of object classes and libraries to facilitate the
construction of advanced artificial life simulations.
Changes: This release features a new GUI for Linux and Windows, new
classes for hardware-optimized 3D matrix manipulation, faster physical
simulation and collision detection, and much more.

[068] - Umbrella 0.7
by Kristian Sørensen (http://freshmeat.net/users/ipqw/)
Thu, Apr 28th 2005 06:37
Security
About: Umbrella is a security mechanism that implements a combination of
Process-Based Access Control (PBAC) and authentication of binaries through
Digital Signed Binaries (DSB). The scheme is designed for Linux-based
consumer electronic devices ranging from mobile phones to set-top boxes.
Umbrella is implemented on top of the Linux Security Modules (LSM)
framework. The PBAC scheme is enforced by a set of restrictions on each
process. This policy is distributed with a binary in form of execute
restrictions and within the program via a "restricted fork" feature.
Changes: Umbrella is now feature complete. The key ring, a new FSR
implementation, and many performance optimizations were added.

[069] - Virtualmin 2.60
by Jamie Cameron (http://freshmeat.net/users/jcameron/)
Thu, Apr 28th 2005 01:51
System :: Systems Administration
About: Virtualmin is a Webmin module that simplifies the process of
setting up and managing virtual servers. It can create Apache virtual
hosts, BIND DNS domains, MySQL and PostgreSQL databases, and set up
Sendmail or Postfix to accept email for a domain. It can also manage
mailboxes and mail aliases within a domain.
Changes: FTP and mail server logs can now be used for bandwidth
monitoring. Graphs can now show usage broken down by type, and can display
usage by day and month. The servers on which bandwidth monitoring is
performed can be restricted. The Webalizer statistics directory can now be
password protected via an option on the templates page. Default quotas and
other limits for a new domain can now be specified in templates. Apache
logs can be written via a program to prevent Apache from failing to start
if a server owner deletes his ~/logs directory. Support for VPOPMail
autoresponders was added.

Software Development :: Documentation
About: wyoGuide is a tutorial, a collection of guidelines for building
cross-platform applications with a well-designed, consistent look and
feel. It gives ideas and advice on how an application and its GUI could
and should be written. Development with these guidelines gives the GUI of
an application a standard set of base functionality. wyoGuide also
provides sample code for each guideline written in C++ using the wxWidgets
(formerly wxWindows) framework. For a seasoned developer it shouldn't be
difficult to adapt these guidelines to other languages or frameworks.
Changes: The guidelines contains a chapter about finding the location of
application related files, e.g. help files, i18n files, etc. There are
other small enhancements in the code of the demo sample.
