Wed, May 4th 2005 02:38
System :: Networking
About: The Chord project aims to build scalable, robust distributed
systems using peer-to-peer ideas. The basis for much of the work is a
distributed hash lookup primitive. It is completely decentralized and
symmetric, and can find data using only log (N) messages, where N is the
number of nodes in the system. The lookup mechanism is provably robust in
the face of frequent node failures and re-joins.

[042] - Layer-7 Packet Classifier for Linux Netfilter 2.4/2.6 patches 1.3
by Matthew Strait (http://freshmeat.net/users/quadong/)
Wed, May 4th 2005 00:10
Communications
Internet
System
About: L7-filter is a Netfilter match module which classifies packets
based on application layer (OSI layer 7) data. This means that it is able
to classify packets as HTTP, FTP, Gnucleus, Kazaa, etc., regardless of
ports. It complements existing matches that classify based on port
numbers, packet length, TOS bits, and so on. Combined with Linux QoS, it
allows for full layer 7 packet shaping.
Changes: For 2.4, connections that are unmatched and no longer being
tested are now explicitly marked "unknown" (this brings the 2.4 patch in
line with the 2.6 patch). The limit on the number of branches in regular

[045] - libnetdude 0.7
by Christian Kreibich (http://freshmeat.net/users/cpk/)
Wed, May 4th 2005 14:30
System :: Networking
About: libnetdude is the packet manipulation backend of the Netdude trace
file editing framework. It allows you to perform trace file manipulations
at a much higher level of abstraction than code written directly for the
pcap interface. It also supports plugins (dynamically loaded libraries)
that can essentially do whatever the programmer desires. When developers
write their packet manipulation code as libnetdude plugins, this instantly
allows other developers to use their tools. It provides data types and APIs
for the most common situations when dealing with libpcap trace files: trace
files of arbitrary size, packets, network protocols, packet iterators, and
packet filters, just to name a few.
Changes: This release includes a number of bugfixes and portability
improvements; in particular, it should build smoothly on Mac OS.

Wed, May 4th 2005 14:30
Software Development :: Libraries

About: libpcapnav is a libpcap wrapper library that allows navigation to
arbitrary locations in a tcpdump trace file between reads. The API is
intentionally much like that of the pcap library. You can navigate in
trace files both in time and space. You can jump to a packet which is at
approximately 2/3 of the trace, or you can jump as closely as possible to
a packet with a given timestamp, and then read packets from there. In
addition, the API provides convenience functions for manipulating timeval
structures.

About: PlanMyDay helps you plan all the activities that have to be done
today. It imports the following entries from your built-in or extra
applications: todos, floating events (timed and untimed), and user-defined
events. You can assign the duration each of them takes and reorder them as
you wish. PlanMyDay calculates (from a given start time) when every item
should be finished. After you mark what percent of each entry is finished,
the complete timetable is recalculated.
Changes: Reset is now possible for days and single entries. Start time
settings apply to dates in the future. Rest time calculation when the
current appointment conflicts with a fixed time appointment. Better
detection for Datebk5-notes. New high resolution icons. PalmOS 5
compatibility bugfixes. Sync with Todos works correctly in two directions.
Correct calculation for end time. Deletion of incorrect records is stopped

Wed, May 4th 2005 14:37
Internet :: Log Analysis
System :: Networking :: Monitoring
System :: Systems Administration
About: pmacct is a small set of IPv4/IPv6 accounting and aggregation
tools. Aggregation of IP traffic revolves around the concept of
primitives (VLAN id, source and destination MAC addresses, IP addresses,
networks, AS numbers, ports, ToS field, and IP protocol are supported)
that may be employed alone or arbitrarily combined with others to form
complex aggregation methods. It supports custom historical breakdown,
packet sampling, filtering and tagging, recovery actions, and triggers.
Both libpcap (and promiscuous mode if required) and NetFlow
v1/v5/v7/v8/v9 are supported.
Changes: Support for IP flows has been added in nfacctd, the NetFlow
accounting daemon. Data pre-processing capabilities have been strongly
enhanced by some new thresholds: maxp (maximum number of packets), maxb
(maximum bytes transferred), minf/maxf (minimum/maximum number of flows),
minbpp/maxbbp (minimum/maximum bytes per packet average value), and
minppf/maxppf (minimum/maximum packets per flow average value). The
ability to instruct a BPF filter against the ToS field of a NetFlow packet
has been added.

[082] - Redet 6.2
by Bill Poser (http://freshmeat.net/users/billposer/)
Wed, May 4th 2005 09:21
Text Processing :: Linguistic
About: Redet (Regular Expression Development and Execution Tool) is a tool
for developing and executing regular expressions using any of more than 20
search programs, editors, and programming languages. For each program in
each locale a palette showing the available regular expression constructs
is provided. The features of each program are determined by running a test
suite, which guarantees that they will be correct for the particular
program version in use and for the user's locale. The locale may be
changed without exiting Redet. Selections from the palette may be copied
to the regular expression window with a mouse click. Definitions can be
added to the palette via an initialization file. The regular expressions
executed are recorded in a history list, from which entries may be copied
to the regular expression window with a mouse click. This allows complex
regular expressions to be developed in pieces. When a suitable regular
expression has been constructed it may be saved to a file. Named character
classes may be defined in a file or entered interactively. As long as the
underlying program supports Unicode, Redet fully supports UTF-8 Unicode.
Changes: Widgets for entering diacritics and accented letters were added
and the IPA consonant and vowel entry widgets were improved. A distinction
between bilateral embedding, left embedding, and right embedding is now
made when program features are tested and reflected in the marking of the
program name in the Execute-X menu button. A bug introduced in version 6.1
has been fixed. In an excess of irony, this bug prevented the bug report
popup from being displayed.

About: Tim's Webmail is a Web-based POP3 email viewer powered by Java
Servlets and JSP. It uses SMTP to send email via the JavaMail API. It's
fully compatible with sendmail and QMail. It has a simple user interface,
and all basic email functions are available, including attachments.
Support for multi-part messages and mailbox filtering is also implemented.
The user interface is customizable using the presentation layer JSP pages
and the CSS file provided.
Changes: Some minor bugs have been fixed. Filtering was not matching
searches containing upper case characters. The flow of the controller
servlet needed adjusting so that the logout function worked correctly.

About: Treebolic is a suite of programs (an engine, a generator, a
browser, and example Web services) whose purpose is to give a hyperbolic
rendering of a hierarchy of data. A tree is rendered with nodes and edges
but display space is subject to a particular curvature: more space is
allocated to the focus node while the parent and children, still in the
immediate visual context, appear slightly smaller. The grandparents and
grandchildren are still visible but smaller still. Distant nodes gradually
disappear towards the disk's border, as though the whole hierarchy were
seen through a fish eye lens.

Other/Nonlisted Topic
About: TreeLine is used to organize and store text data in a tree
structure. It is well suited to keeping track of many different types of
information. Each node of the tree can contain several defined fields,
forming a mini-database. The format of each node can be defined, and the
output can be shown on the screen, printed, or exported to HTML. The tree
structure is navigated and edited in the left pane of the window, while
various views of the child data are shown and editable in the right pane.
The data is stored in XML text files. TreeLine is based on the PyQt
library.
Changes: New data field types were added, including executable links and
auto-completing fields. Display of alternate text for link fields was
added. File dialogs for path fields are available. Child data can be
listed in the parent node's output. An new option controls the output of
line breaks. There were several other updates and bug fixes, including fix
for a problem with deleting all children of the root node.

Software Development :: Testing
About: Web Performance Trainer is a load testing and stress testing tool
for Web servers. Its statistical analysis takes your site's performance
criteria, and determines the number of users your Web site can handle.
Because data is collected at the URL level, it not only identifies slow
Web pages, but identifies the particular part of the Web page that caused
the problem. Web Performance Trainer includes hard-to-find features such
as IP spoofing, client certificates, multiple simultaneous test cases,
authentication, SSL recording and playback, automated analysis, and more.
Changes: This build adds configuration support for the increasingly
popular Firefox. The connection attempt duration was added to the error
message when the connection to the server fails. The HTTP body parser was
enhanced to read content when there is no content-type, content-length, or
transfer-encoding specified, but proxy-connection:close headers are
present.

[119] - Zero Memory Widget 0.0.12
by Thierry Excoffier (http://freshmeat.net/users/exco/)
Wed, May 4th 2005 09:27
Software Development :: User Interfaces
Software Development :: Widget Sets
About: The Zero Memory Widget library is as powerful as classic widget
libraries, but it does not use a single bit of memory per widget. So with
this library, there is no widget pointer/reference, instance
creation/destruction, event handler function, functions to read/write data
between widget and application, and so on. GUI programming with this
library is done in the C language, and it is as easy as composing an HTML
page.
Changes: This release is far more fast and reliable than 0.0.11. Some
function names were changed to be closer to their GTK equivalent.
Multi-lines texts are now easely editable. Active buttons change color
when the cursor is above them. When running an application, it is now
possible to profile the time (real time, not CPU time) used in each widget
defined in the user source code.

non-portability warnings to help people to write portable makefiles).
Smake now detects endless recursions from bad default rules. It now
supports Termination pattern matching rules like %:: s.%; SCCS get $@ to
prevent endless recursion on such default rules. It now prints Command
