Video and Audio Streaming with Flash and Open Source Tools
by Klaus Rechert (http://freshmeat.net/~mrmike/)
Section: Tutorials
Sat, May 7th 2005 00:00
Flash has always been developed and used for multimedia purposes, but
until version 6, the possibilities for audio streaming were limited, and
there was no video support. With versions 6 and 7, Macromedia introduced
video support and a new file format to support various ways of streaming.
This article covers only a streaming variant called "progressive
download", which does not need server support.

System :: Logging
About: NEPM monitors and reports uptime, critical events and their
predecessors, access rates, bytes-served rates, and error rates for
network node equipment. Hardware and software elements within the nodes
are tracked and reported separately to make possible rapid fault
isolation. It is a very general, highly configurable, two-part software
system that captures and analyzes logged performance data from
IP-networked equipment and reports it via email and Web pages. Current
conditions and history from systems based on Windows NT/2000, Unix, and
Unix-style operating systems can be tracked and reported. Most major
server, switch and router systems can be monitored, without running agents
on the target systems. NEPM itself is system-independent and can be hosted
on either a Unix or Win NT system or a combination of these with equal
ease.

compatible routers without the need for a syslog server.

[040] - STUBS and Franki/Earlgrey Linux 0.6.4-2/0.6.5pre3 (STUBS

by William Towle (http://freshmeat.net/users/etwills/)
Sat, May 7th 2005 11:50
System :: Operating System
System :: Operating System :: Linux Distributions
System :: Operating System :: Linux Distributions :: CD-Based
About: Franki and Earlgrey Linux are small but usable Linux distributions
designed to demonstrate the full extent of STUBS, the Toolchain and
Utility Build Suite. STUBS is a set of configuration files and scripts
designed to build (and optionally employ) toolchains from just a list of
desired packages, and has scripts capable of downloading sources as
necessary beforehand. It is designed to both bootstrap and work within the
Franki Linux environment, requiring just kernel headers and working
make/gcc/binutils to do so.
Changes: This is a re-release of the stable configurations in a form
suitable for building on systems with gcc 3.x installed. The release files
include Configurations 0.6.5pre3 and 0.7.2pre3, updating files for (among
others) e3, elinks, gettext, hd2u, hdparm, m4, readline, unzip,
util-linux, zsh, and zsync to recent versions and adding microcom.

[041] - sudosh 1.6.0
by Doug Hanks (http://freshmeat.net/users/dhanks/)
Sat, May 7th 2005 20:46
System :: Logging
System :: Monitoring
System :: Operating System
About: sudosh is a filter that takes advantage of PTY devices in order to
sit between the user's keyboard and a program, in this case a shell. It
was designed specifically to be used in conjunction with sudo, and allows
the execution of a root shell with logging. It is basically a VCR and will
record root shell sessions and also has the ability to play back the
sessions as they were originally recorded. It records all input/output,
keyboard input, and timing information so that the session can be played
back in the original format.
Changes: This release now calls shells as if they were a login shell. It
automatically sets the environment variables LOGNAME, USER, TERM, SHELL,
and PATH, and changes the directory to user's HOME directory. It adds a
random string to the log files so that non-privileged users cannot delete
their log files, removes tampering code because it was not portable, and
includes a general code cleanup.

[044] - Tea4CUPS 2.11
by Jerome Alet (http://freshmeat.net/users/jalet/)
Sat, May 7th 2005 20:28
Printing
System :: Archiving
System :: Logging
About: Tea4CUPS is similar in functionnality to the *nix command "tee",
but in the form of a CUPS (Common UNIX Printing System) backend. Tea4CUPS
captures a print job's data in their final form while they are being sent
to a printer (more precisely, to a CUPS backend), and at the same time
allows you to dispatch these data to any number of commands.
Changes: This release now works with old versions of Python (>=2.1). The
error handling code was improved. Finally errors in posthooks are now
ignored because at that time the job was printed successfully anyway, so
there's no reason to stop the print queue.

[045] - Vice Stats 0.2 beta

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: Page Counters
System :: Logging
About: Vice Stats is an advanced Web site statistics gathering package. It
collects data about the resources in a Web site, the visitors to that site,
and the referring resources. It runs in PHP and stores its data in a MySQL
database.
Changes: This release fixes variable scope when including vs.php inside a
function. It fixes hits/visits per week results for the current day, and
fixes the visitor report when there is no known country. From within the
reporting interface, you can now set a cookie that will block your visits
from being recorded. A single visitor clicking or reloading multiple times
from the same referrer will be logged (as a referral) only once.
Demographics are now available by the number of visits, not number of
hits. Support for sites that are a subdirectory rather than their own
domain was added.

by ijw (http://freshmeat.net/users/ijw/)

Software Development :: Libraries
About: WxLib is a widely resuable C++ library that converts many
facilities that are found in the standard C library into a form that is
more appropriate for use in a C++ context. The library wraps functions for
dealing with threads, files, FIFOs, serial I/O, sockets, and directories.
It focuses on the correct use of C++ functions, and especially on the
correct use of error handling mechanisms.
Changes: Bugfixes were made for system file classes, including WyByteFlow,
WyChrFile, WyTerminal, WySockFile, WyFifoFile, Wy::cin, Wy::cout, and
Wy::cerr, by removing read_char(..), read_till(..), and other members. The
class member rule for swap was updated.
