Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Conversion
About: The abcMIDI suite consists of programs for turning ABC music files
into MIDI and vice versa, typesetting them as PostScript files, and
manipulate them in several ways.
Changes: Some %%MIDI commands can now be applied outside of the tune (for
example, globally in tune collections). Another important new feature is
voice splitting using the "&" syntax introduced by abcm2ps.

Software Development
Software Development :: Build Tools
Software Development :: Interpreters
About: ACDK is a development framework with a similar target of
Microsoft's .NET or Sun's ONE platform, but it uses C++ as a core
implementation language. It implements the standard library packages,
including acdk::lang, acdk::lang::reflect, acdk::util, acdk::io,
acdk::text (including regexpr), acdk::net, acdk::sql, acdk::xml, and more.
Flexible allocator/garbage collection, threading, and Unicode are
implemented in the core of ACDK. Extensions make C++ objects available for
reflection, serialization, aspect-oriented class attributes, and [D]ynamic
[M] ethod [I]nvocation. This DMI acts as an universal object oriented call
interface to connect C++ with scripting languages (Java, Perl, Tcl, Python,
Lisp, Visual Basic, and VBScript) and standard component technologies
(CORBA and COM).
Changes: This release improves overall performance, especially with the
execution of CfgScript scripts. Improvements and bugfixes were made in
string handling, localization, threading, configuration, and build.
Support for datagram sockets and SSL streams including HTTPS URLs is
added. A JDBC-like desktop database based on SQLite and a remote method
invocation similar to RMI are introduced in this release. ACDK now
supports GCC 4.0, VC 8 (2005), and current releases of wxWidgets and
OpenSSL.

Multimedia :: Graphics :: Editors :: Vector-Based
Printing
About: Asymptote is a powerful script-based vector graphics language for
technical drawing, inspired by MetaPost but with an improved C++-like
syntax. It provides for figures the same high-quality level of typesetting
that LaTeX does for scientific text. It is a programming language as
opposed to just a graphics program, allowing it to exploit the best
features of script (command-driven) and graphical user interface (GUI)
methods. High-level graphics commands are implemented in the language
itself, allowing them to be easily tailored to specific applications.
Changes: Integers are converted to reals before dividing; a real quotient
is returned. The "quotient(int, int)" function returns the integer part.
Garbage collection has been implemented to fix memory leaks. A knot
solving bug was fixed. Pen "plabel" vs. "p" issues were addressed. The
"eval" function was renamed to "map". An array "concat" function and
complex exponential/logarithmic functions were added. The function
"reltime" is useful for the draw "position" argument. A geometry module
includes a triangle structure and functions to draw interior arcs of
triangles and perpendicular symbols.

About: Barcode Writer in Pure Postscript implements the printing of many
barcode formats entirely within level 2 PostScript, so that the process of
converting the input string into the printed output is performed by the
printer itself. This avoids the need to re-implement the barcode
generation process whenever your language needs change. The project
supports most major barcode formats including EAN-13, EAN-8, UPC-A, UPC-E,
ISBN, Code 128 (A, B, and C), Code 39, Interleaved 2 of 5, Postnet, Code 2
of 5, and Codabar.
Changes: The ability to allow the code to remain resident within most
printer's PostScript virtual machines, until a hard reset is performed,
was added.

About: BSDftpd-ssl is a secure and easy to use FTP server that supports
industry standard TLS/SSL encryption and authentication for whole FTP
sessions and data transfers. This implementation supports both the
original FTP protocol and the RFC2228-compliant TLS/SSL enhancement. The
package contains the secure FTP server (named "ftpd") and a command line
TLS/SSL-aware FTP client (named "ftps"). The server's features include
logging of transfers, changing of a session root (known as "chroot"), and
virtual host support.
Changes: The NetBSD operating system is now supported. The xferlog and
audit logging formats have been enhanced. The IPv6 support is now
available for all supported operating systems. Both SysV-style
passwd/shadow implementation (used in Linux) and BSD-style
passwd/master.passwd are now properly supported in case of the standard
UNIX authentication (without PAM).

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Analysis
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Editors
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: MIDI
About: Freecycle is a beat slicer that provides amplitude domain and
frequency domain beat matching and zero crossing algorithms. It exports
sliced audio chunks and generates a MIDI file that can be used to play the
sliced loop. It also exports AKAI S5000/S6000/Z4/Z8 .AKP files for use with
your favorite sampler. A LADSPA interface with full control parameter
automation and some quite basic but powerful routing schemas is also
provided. With traditional amplitude (scope) view, a fully integrated
spectrogram view is also offered, which is useful for LADSPA filter
visualization. Freecycle has a basic OSS output and preliminary JACK layer
connectivity.
Changes: Freecycle projects can now be saved and loaded. A Freecycle
project file contains the wave data, locked beatlines, LADSPA information
(for routing and automation), envelope data, and loop positions. Audio
samples between two locked beatlines can be dragged out from Freecycle and
dropped as files to a file manager or any application that supports the
dropping of audio files. Locked beatlines are now visible in the LADSPA
automation frame, which allows the locking of spline/polyline points to
the beat. Bugfixes and optimizations were made, and redundancies were
removed.

Multimedia :: Graphics
Printing
System :: Hardware
About: Gimp-Print is a collection of very high quality printer drivers for
UNIX/Linux. The goal of this project is uncompromising print quality and
robustness. Included with this package is the Print plugin for the GIMP
(hence the name), a CUPS driver, and two drivers (traditional and
IJS-based) for Ghostscript that may be compiled into that package. This
driver package is Foomatic-compatible and provides Foomatic data to enable
plug and play with many print spoolers. In addition, various printer
maintenance utilities are included. Many users report that the quality of
Gimp-Print on high end Epson Stylus printers matches or exceeds the
quality of the drivers supplied for Windows and Macintosh.
Changes: Foomatic data generation has been fixed. This is the first
5.0-based release with full Foomatic support. This release also fully
supports the Epson Stylus Photo R800/R1800. A number of problems with the
CUPS driver were fixed, particularly printing directly to a CD. 16-bit
printing with CUPS is supported for CUPS versions capable of it.
Significant improvements were made to escputil.

[032] - nettee 0.1.5
by mathog (http://freshmeat.net/users/mathog/)
Tue, May 10th 2005 08:29
About: nettee is a network "tee" program. It can typically transfer data
between N nodes at (nearly) the full bandwidth provided by the switch
which connects them. It is handy for cloning nodes or moving large
database files.
Changes: The -conwf (Continue on Network Write Failure) and -colwf
(Continue on Local Write Failure) options were added. These allow a chain
to continue distributing data to the extent possible if certain write
errors occur on one or more nodes in the chain during a data transfer. The
-stm option was added. In conjunction with execinput, this lets nettee
replace rshd in situations where commands must be executed rapidly on
multiple nodes. In a 20 node test system, commands were executed in under
01 seconds on all nodes. Documentation for using nettee with System

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: CGI Tools/Libraries
About: Penguin Greetings is a Perl Web-based greeting card application. It
can be run as standard CGI application or persistently via SpeedyCGI. The
package supports any number of independent ecard sites running on the same
server. Full card contents are sent as multi-part MIME email. The HTML for
the cards and the creation screens are rendered from Embperl or Mason
templates, making the program completely customizable by Web developers
and capable of server-side scripting in Perl. Emailing and database
updates are performed by a separate daemon.
Changes: This is a release candidate for the 1.0 version. Support for
using HTML::Mason in addition to Embperl was added. Most secondary ecard
sites were localized using Perl's Locale::Maketext. Some general use
templates were added to simplify site building. Scheduling when card
categories are displayed during the calendar year was implemented. Older
ecard sites have received a face-lift. A new secondary site in Mason was
created: Savoring the sights of Seattle. The total number of cards in the
collection is now 240.

Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries
About: Wi.Ser is a Java/XML server-side GUI-framework which enables an
application to run as either a monolithic Swing app, a client/server Swing
app, or as a Web app without any change. It includes a mixed deployment
mode, which supports one server to serve Swing clients and Web clients at
the same time. The framework uses XML to define an application's GUI. It
provides a common widget-based, object-oriented programming interface for
Web and Swing GUIs, which prevents the developer from struggling with HTML
and HTTP or with the internals of Swing. For Swing client/server
applications the client/server split as well as the client/server
communication is handled transparently by the framework. The project
includes a GUI builder that is based on the framework's functionality
(screenshot, deployed as a Web/HTML application).
Changes: This release includes a new tabindex property. The message window
in the GUI builder can be cleared and messages are shown within a table.
New alignments like NORTHWEST, NORTHEAST, ... are available. A new
Web/HTML combobox which renders all other widgets as cell-entries has been
implemented. Many corrections were made in TemplateKits to render cleaner
HTML. A new Datepicker/Calendar plugin shows the mechanisms for extending
the framework. A reconfiguration of HTML widget templates is provided with
this release to achieve an "AJAX"-like behavior.

[060] - XINS 1.2.0-rc1 (Development)
by Ernst de Haan (http://freshmeat.net/users/znerd/)

Communications
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Software Development :: Build Tools
About: XINS is a technology used to define, create, and invoke remote
APIs. XINS is specification-oriented. When API specifications are written
(in XML), XINS will transform them to HTML-based documentation and Java
code for both the client-side and the server-side. The communication is
based on HTTP. XINS competes with the complex SOAP technology. Main design
goals include simplicity, scalability, and testability. XINS is not only a
specification technology, but also an application development framework.
It offers transaction logging, unique log documentation, and active code
generation.
Changes: More unit tests were added. A few small bugs were fixed. Some
code was cleaned up.
