[001] - 1060 NetKernel Standard Edition 2.0.6
  by Peter Rodgers (http://freshmeat.net/users/1060/)
  Wed, May 11th 2005 02:42

Internet
System :: Operating System

About: 1060 NetKernel Standard Edition is an Application Server that
provides a unique service-oriented abstraction which is a convergence of
the core ideas of the Web and Unix. NKSE is a general purpose modular
infrastructure which comes with powerful and simple XML processing tools.
It may be used for SOAP 1.1, 1.2, and REST Web-Services, JMS MOM, XML
pipeline processing, general systems integration, or as a Web-application
server. The NetKernel abstraction simplifies complexity and thus increases
the scope and potential of the systems built upon it.

Changes: This release provides updates to some system tools to workaround
the Java File.getURI() bug on Win32 platforms. The system version number
is now shown in the system healthcheck tool and some small updates to the
documentation  were made.

  Wed, May 11th 2005 21:17

Security
System :: Networking :: Firewalls

About: Easy Firewall Generator is a PHP Web application that generates an
iptables firewall script. The generated script is designed for a single
system connected to the Internet or a system acting as a gateway/firewall
for a small private network. The generator prompts recursively for a
variety of options. When the selected options form a complete set, it
generates and returns a commented firewall script based on those options.
The generator includes documentation on iptables and each option.

Changes: The script was altered to do some basic ingress filtering on
firewalls generated for gateway systems by dropping packets coming in the
external interface that have a source of the internal network.

About: gipfel is a tool to find the names of mountains or points of

With the given viewpoint (the point from which the picture was taken) and
two known mountains on the picture, it can compute all parameters needed
to compute the positions of other mountains on the picture.
Additionally, it can try to guess these parameter if only one mountain is
known on the picture. In this case, a few other peaks need to be marked,
but it is not necessary to know their names. It can also be used to play
around with the parameters manually. But be warned: It is pretty

[039] - GNU ddrescue 1.0-pre1 (Development)
  by Antonio Diaz Diaz (http://freshmeat.net/users/ant_diaz/)
  Wed, May 11th 2005 09:33

System :: Recovery Tools

About: GNU ddrescue is a data recovery tool. It copies data from one file
or block device (hard disc, cdrom, etc) to another, trying hard to rescue
data in case of read errors. GNU ddrescue does not truncate the output
file if not asked to. So, every time you run it on the same output file,
it tries to fill in the gaps. The basic operation of GNU ddrescue is fully
automatic. That is, you don't have to wait for an error, stop the program,
read the log, run it in reverse mode, etc. If you use the logfile feature
of GNU ddrescue, the data is rescued very efficiently (only the needed
blocks are read). Also you can interrupt the rescue at any time and resume
it later at the same point.

Changes: A new logfile format makes multi-part rescue possible. The
logfile is saved to disc every 30 seconds, so in case of a crash you can
resume the rescue with little recopying. The logfile is now also saved in
case of write error on the outfile.

  Wed, May 11th 2005 09:11

Multimedia :: Graphics :: Presentation
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Viewers

About: GTK Photo Gallery is an album to manage small and medium-sized
photograph collections. It allows quick management by processing multiple
files together. Rotate, delete, move, and manage descriptions can be done
for all files in one directory at once. It is possible to upload pictures
to an online laboratory to order prints. GTK Photo Gallery is implemented
with GTK2-Perl, and due to the lack of a Web server in between, it is much
faster than CGI-based scripts. It uses the same directory structure as
(and can be used together with) My Photo Gallery (a set of CGI scripts).
It is possible to export (and import) an Album into 700 MB large parts for
easy CD backup, including static HTML pages to navigate the CD. This can
also be used to create a simple album for the Web.

Changes: The Exif viewer uses Image::EXIF and supports many more cameras

About: kfsmd (kernel filesystem monitor daemon) is a daemon to log and
view kernel filesystem changes using inotify. Its main purpose is to allow
libferris to reindex all updated files while you are sleeping.

Changes: This release features a new daemon-cat to just pump inotify
messages to the console, and removes inotify.h from the distribution. The
PG daemon is now less syslog intense, the startup database use shares a
single transaction, and with -U can log file data including mtimes during
startup. Queue throttling on /dev/inotify was implemented.

  Wed, May 11th 2005 08:56

Internet :: Log Analysis

System :: Logging

About: Lard is a Logging and Rotation Daemon that can replace the
functionality of sysklogd and logrotate together. Logging is done almost
exactly the same as syslogd, with added features such as regex matching
and command triggers. Rotation can be triggered while the daemon is
running safely by sending it a simple signal.

Changes: Lard now knows the "post" rule keyword. This allows you to
specify post-rotate actions. Lard automatically sees that the same command
does not need to be executed twice in a row and runs commands only once per
rotation event. Lard also properly detaches from stdin/out/err now when it
is run as daemon. The example configuration has been adjusted to provide a
more commonly used base config. This is what most people will use in real
life, and it mimics more or less what most distributions provide as
default.

About: NEPM monitors and reports uptime, critical events and their
predecessors, access rates, bytes-served rates, and error rates for
network node equipment. Hardware and software elements within the nodes
are tracked and reported separately to make possible rapid fault
isolation. It is a very general, highly configurable, two-part software
system that captures and analyzes logged performance data from
IP-networked equipment and reports it via email and Web pages. Current
conditions and history from systems based on Windows NT/2000, Unix, and
Unix-style operating systems can be tracked and reported. Most major
server, switch and router systems can be monitored, without running agents
on the target systems. NEPM itself is system-independent and can be hosted

About: pasmal is a TCP/IP packet authentication system. When it receives a
sequence of ICMP or TCP packets to any port (open/closed), it will issue a

filter/firewall/port knocking/encoding keys facilities. It also acts as an
intrusion detection system due to its sniffer capabilities.

Changes: A syslog-related bug in the intrusion detection engine
(module_alert.c) has been fixed. A few local security holes in the packet
sniffer engine (pasmal.c) have been fixed. Packet intrusion detection
logging has been added (module_alert.c). Intrusion detection, port

  Wed, May 11th 2005 09:17

Software Development

About: Plan 9 From User Space is a port of the bulk of the Plan 9 software
build environment to Unix. While the libraries make an attempt to play nice
with the rest of the system (by using the Unix rules for printf verbs and
Unix system headers, for example), this port tries to reproduce the Plan 9
build environment as faithfully as possible, providing u.h and libc.h, and
blithely redefining tokens such as open, dup, and accept in order to
provide implementations that better mimic the Plan 9 semantics. The result
is a more complicated and less Unix-friendly environment, but Plan 9

[115] - Units of measurement for Ada 2.0
  by Dmitry Kazakov (http://freshmeat.net/users/kazakov/)
  Wed, May 11th 2005 14:04

Scientific/Engineering

About: The library provides an implementation of dimensioned values for
Ada. Unit checks are made at run-time, if not optimized out by the
compiler. SI and irregular measurement units are supported. Shifted units
like degrees Celsius are supported too. Conversions from and back to
strings are provided for all various irregular units.

Changes: Instantiation of the generic packages was simplified. The package
Measures_Universal_Edit was added to provide string I/O for multiple
character sets. Some functions were renamed for conformity with the
established naming tradition in Ada.

  Wed, May 11th 2005 16:02

Software Development :: Libraries
System :: Networking
System :: Operating System Kernels

About: The Web100 project was created to produce a complete host-software
environment that will run common TCP applications at 100% of the available
bandwidth, regardless of the magnitude of a network's capability. Web100
has endowed TCP with better instrumentation. This instrumentation is the
foundation for both the TCP autotuning performed in process-level code and
the process- level tools designed to locate bottlenecks within the
following major subsystems: the sending application, the sending OS, the
Internet path, the receiving OS, and the receiving application.
Measurement tools have also been built on this instrumentation to display
performance indicators to end-users, as well as provide internal
diagnostics for network and system administrators.

Changes: Updated to Linux 2.6.11. Numerous bugfixes, content cleanups, and
code cleanups.
