Is this a libdvdread problem or a libdvdcss problem? Good question, seems strange :-/ Could you try reading the DVD with xine or mplayer and see what gives? mplayer dvd://1 and xine both died when trying to read the DVD. mplayer's error was similar to the error that dvdrip gave, xine gave some cryptic error that I interpret to be similar. Neither mplayer nor xine were able to access the DVD drive. Does this happen with other DVDs (or even CDs) too ? Can you mount the DVD like a normal CD ? Does /var/log/messages give an error indication ? I remember having problems with some of the DVD libraries on 1 single DVD that played well on another system. After cleaning it, it worked. YMMV I guess I was assuming that the disc wasn't the problem -- it's a DVD of a television series and I hadn't had any problems with any of the other discs. I'll try some other discs tonight to see if it might just be that one disc. I've been subscribed to a DVD-by-mail service for awhile now, and while I've had discs that gave me read errors during ripping, this is the first I've had that failed immediately -- which made me immediately suspect libdvdread or libdvdcss. Since I won't have the ability to try other discs until later tonight, in the meantime can anybody confirm that they're able to rip a DVD with perl-Video-DVDRip (from freshrpms) on FC4?
