I switched to vc1; removed old package; installed
ati-x11-drv-debuginfo-8.30.3-1.fc6.x86_64
ati-x11-drv-devel-8.30.3-1.fc6.x86_64
ati-x11-drv-8.30.3-1.fc6.x86_64

run telinit 3; telinit 5 and it works!

but running

fglrxinfo

and as there is no Xfree86-DRI, the following test/demo crashed:
