The archives of this list may  have some hints on how to deal with
the external DVDrom issue.  There were lots of reports of problems
with that, but I forget the details.

No, there are others, but SuSE is the clear leader at this point because
8.2 installs and gets everything working without putting you in RPM hell
and without the need of a kernel compile.
