Hotplug Device assignment inconsistant

I'm running SuSE 8.2 and i have a GRX570. It has 3 usb ports and a FireWire 
port. I use a couple of those thumb drives on the usb port and a external 
FireWire hard drive on the firewire port. I also have a seldome used usb 
floppy drive that works well.

When you plug them in SuSE's hotplug services senses the devices and assigns 
them to a some scsi emulation device. Most of the time it will place a 
mount/demount icon on the desktop, but this seems to fail after more than one 
physical disconnects in the same boot session.

Here's the problem.... I can never be sure what scsi device it will choose to 
assign. For instance, my firewire drive usually comes up as /dev/sdb1 and the 
thumb drives usually come up as /dev/sda1. But this is quite inconsistant, 
and there is no way I can build a KDE desktop mounting/unmounting icon that 
mounts these things nor can i write any backup scripts that I can trust 
because I can never be sure the firewire will be /dev/sdb1. It might come up 
as /dev/sdc1 next time.

Is there any way anyone knows to lock these 4 ports to a given
device name, one each?

I typically use a usb mouse, plugged in to one of the three usb ports.
