I had only one fishy situation with Sony support. My first notebook
was refurbished and therefore it had warranty of 90 days only. After 3
months Sony called me encouraging to purchase the 1-, 2-, or 3- year
warranty. I said no, and then they send in a letter few month later
stating that my warranty is expiring and "here's a special deal to
renew it". Shame, but at that point the warranty did not work (I
checked it). They were lying to me. So I
say the promotion department does everything to get money from you, no
matter what.

Well, the lesson is clear: if you are buying anything (computer, car,
grill, you name it) and there is some promotion offer of some interest to you (that
is to say, the promotion was substantial in your decision to buy that
product, then make photocopies of everything you send in, call them
to check whether they received all the papers, and if they deny for no
reason, send in the copies of everything one more time, making them
sign the delivery. Then having all the copies and receipts, you are
contacting the credit card company. The thing is they know it's difficult to
fight huge corporation like Sony or Microsoft if you are just a poor
customer, and if you are ripped off, you'll give up, but the credit
card company is a good ally in such case.
