looks like the ACPI modules aren't loading.

sleep (suspend to ram) isn't supported in 2.4 kernels at all; suspend to
disk works for some people, but not for all. Have a look at
/etc/suspend.conf and the pmsuspend script, you might be able to tweak
them and get lucky.

there are some scripts out there for listening to acpi events and
running tools like longrun -- autospeedstep is a more efficient way to
do it though, so I'd just stick with that.
