I think the mem sticks are fat32 (vfat).    I think a line
like this in your /etc/fstab may help
/dev/hde1            /media/memcard       vfat       noauto,user,sync,exec 0 0

Hubert Mantel is SuSE's chief Kernel Guru.  He publishes new kernels well
ahead of the SuSE release date, and these ofteh have enhancements back
loaded from the next official kernel (e.g. 2.5 or 2.6 features in 
2.4.21 etc.  You can seldom go wrong with a Mantel pre-compiles
kernels.
