I have installed Knoppix on two Sony models.  A Vaio Z1AP which everything went
pretty much flawlessly from boot up.  Except of course the built in WiFi card
which will not work (it is the one with software programmable freqs so people
are afraid to release drivers).  The sound sucks too.  It makes a chirping noise
about every 4 seconds, but an earlier thread made me think that might be
remedied by switchin to ALSA.  Other than those two ... the Knoppix disc ran
without a hitch on the first bootup.

Other sonys  (an old Vaio 505 of some sort) I had to boot with no PCMCIA (which
worked fine even though I was booring off of the PCMCIA CDROM).  There was
another, newer 505 ... hmmm about 8 months old maybe.  I had to give it some
specific address on the boot line to get it to recognize the CDROM properly ...
something like "hdc=0x386,0x440" (the numbers here are made up, but the error I
got when I tried to boot googled to give me the correct parameters to enter).

Good luck, its pretty hit or miss with the sonys.  But, I haven't seen one that
didn't work.  Granted I have only seen three and done hdinstall on two.
