Is the processor used a lot? If you are using KDE, it may help to simplify the eye-candy stuff. In KDE Control Center, go to LookNFeel and then to Window Decorations. Unselect anything similar to "Use shadows" or "Animate whatever". Another option is to *not* use a Wallpaper just some color. Also, reduce the number of workspaces (virtual desktops) to 2 (or even one). Anyway, none of these should make any difference in a modern laptop, so please, give us some information about your laptop and your current configuration.
