That might just be an issue with DHCP -- possibly the laptop is trying 
to retrieve an IP address but is failing to do so. DHCP should 
eventually time out -- how long are you waiting before deciding that 
it's gotten stuck? Also, it could be an issue with linux trying to 
detect/install the card -- wireless or otherwise.

Just to experiment: try booting up with it on a network with a DHCP 
server (if you haven't already tried this).

Also, try disabling the network cards in the BIOS to see if it gets past 
that point in the boot process. Once you are in Linux you might be able 
to fix up the boot process, re-enable the network devices in the bios 
and then boot up normally.
