Well, I only have about 20 or so years unix experience.....I suspect I may be 
more lazy than you. But this is expected --I am an engineer and a computer is 
just another tool in the box for me. 

Right then, firstly, you will need to get the fonts for Japanese. You will 
also want to enable (the appropriate languages) font support in the Kernel. 
You will also need an entry system --such as kterm and or whatever. You will 
also need some interpreter (TSR) like canna and/or Wnn.

The vast majority of computer work these days is WP (openoffice --for free, it 
seems to have better japanese support), browsing (Mozilla, Netscape are among 
many popular ones that have Japanese support), and e-mail (you can use 
Mozilla/Netscape for this, or use some custom e-mail client --Sylpheed seems 
popular with many Japanese; but I still prefer Kmail).
