tmpfs

running LEAF since decades I take the chance to say Thank You to 
everybody involved in this project.

A few weeks ago I did an upgrade to LEAF Bering-uClibc 7.3.1.1 Rev 1 in 
the hope that it would fix a small problem that I've been putting off 
dealing with for ages:
On the LEAF box, /var/log seems to run full and the logs are then no 
longer written. But the information is contradictory:

# df -h
Filesystem Size Used Available Use% Mounted on
tmpfs 150.0M 4.0K 150.0M 0% /tmp
tmpfs 500.0M 375.0M 125.0M 75% /var/log
root 64.0M 42.9M 21.1M 67% /

# du -h /var/log/
136.0K /var/log/ntpstats
12.0K /var/log/lighttpd
7.1M /var/log/

The truth here lies with the du output. The logrotation works just fine:

-rw-r-----    1 root     adm         560580 Oct 29 08:09 syslog
-rw-r-----    1 root     root         76266 Oct 18 06:42 syslog.0.gz
-rw-r-----    1 root     root         79626 Oct  4 06:42 syslog.1.gz

My theory is that the logs occupy a lot of memory before they are 
rotated (compressed) and this memory is not released again in the tmpfs.

I suspect that I am doing something wrong...?
