Zap the doubleclick

For anybody else as dozy as me, if you wish to disable doubleclicks on 
the GNOME desktop and have realised that it cannot be done (how would 
you move an icon without launching the application?) click the middle 
mouse button on an icon.  It has taken me 14 years to discover that (or 
re-remember it).  The panel is OK.  That always responds to single 
clicks.  I have not seen any documentation anywhere but it is mentioned 
on the web many times.
