yes, but fatx is broken in 2.6.

Nothing, but I find it easier to compile all the modules into the kernel. 
Saves making the initrd.

Yup, people run gentoo on their xboxes. Only problem is the lack of memory. 
It's not that bad though, the compile times are faster than my desktop. Since 
it's x86 you can run distcc to speed things up if you have another linux box 
lying around.

I'd recommend you take a look at gentoo. The ebuilds have all of the patches, 
a 2.6.8.1 xbox kernel with lirc driver, and with catalyst and xbeboot it's 
really easy to make bootable xbox CDs.
