What I really want is to have a setup where I just boot, setup the 
network and then just fire up x with a given programm. And an inetd 
running giving me telnet.

Nothing, _nothing_ else.
No crond, atd, syslogd, nothing. Not even more than one tty.

Next thing is, I want to have / mounted ro (!) the whole time and start 
with an empty /var of say 10 megs at every reboot.

So the user can write to /var it which will be wiped out every time they 
reboot.

I guess i have to have access to the fatx disk in this case because I 
will have to mount more loopback files (/, /var). (I certainly do not 
want to make /var a ramdrive)

Is it really feasible to strip down a gentoo install?
Or would building my own mini distribution be better in this case?

Ohh, and I forgot, I need a custom kernel (2.6 prefered, what about the 
status of the fatx driver, will it be fixed soon?)
