I dug up some old posts that dont appear to have been archived on
gmane (exchange between Tim and another user):

The Alsa drivers output digital sound fine, although there was (still
is?) an issue with the way it tags non-PCM streams.

My AV Amp is perfectly happy to decode normal PCM digital sound and DTS
soundtracks, it's a little anal about decoding Dolby Digital though.

I believe the DD spec is more specific about how the bit stream must be
tagged.

My (oldish) Amp recognises a Dolby Digital stream (i.e. the blue light
comes on and the DD symbols all light up), but refuses to play it, as
it's not tagged correctly. It plays DTS fine.

For the record I use my XBox almost exclusively as a MythTV front end.

Just been doing some digging. As far as getting digital sound out of my
xbox, this post:

is by far the most useful resource I've found.

Ah thanks!

I now got digital sound output nicely using alsa device hw:0,2 from
alsaplayer, mplayer etc :)
