It shows a 'default' profile containing what appear to be recent files,
and a 'dev-edition-default' that is not a default profile with files
dated Nov 21, 2017.

... time passes ...

Sorry for not replying sooner.

It turns out that yesterday morning at midnight, everything started working
again all by itself. My bookmarks all reappeared, and new history was being
recorded again (OK, so I lost all of my old history, I can live with that.)
No reboot, no file action on my part, no updates, nothing;
just crossing midnight (local time).

Thanks for your input anyway.
