Early on, I answered all that, either in Bugzilla or in the Red Hat 
support area.

I am running RHEL 3 ES. I am always completely up to date using the Red 
Hat up2date system. I am running with a U.S.Robotics 5610B Real PCI 
internal modem, "56K Performance Pro Modem", Serial number 23PBGBEC02PK, 
it is /dev/ttyS4

I use ifup ppp0 to start the connection. It is configured for demand 
dialing and it works most of the time, but fails every week or two. When 
it fails, it produces no error messages, and keeps running, but it seems 
to think there is a connection even though there is dial tone on the line.

I am currently running

ppp-2.4.1-14.1
wvdial-1.53-11

The ppp (pppd) is more up to date than Red Hat distribute; I tried this in 
response to a Bugzilla suggestion to try it. It did not make any difference.
