RE: Is upgrading the kernel necessary

The reason that the kernel is not upgraded is that it requires a reboot
and is best done separately, therefore the kernel packages are
blacklisted in the up2date config.

To update it, use up2date -uf kernel kernel-smp <whatever else you might
be using)

I have just updated the patches on a HP Prolient DL380 G3 from RHEL AS 3
(Taroon) to AS 3 update 8.

I ran up2date -u. However, the kernel was not been upgraded.

Should I be upgrading the kernel or not?

If I should upgrade the kernel how do I do this and will there be any
impact on the system?

The kernel version is:-

Linux 2.4.21-4.ELsmp #1 SMP Fri Oct 3 17:52:56 EDT 2003 i686 i686 i386
GNU/Linux
