Two things:

- What's an Ultra 8? I know of U1, U2, U5, U10, U30, U60 and I think
  there's an U80, but I haven't heard of an U8?

- Your description wasn't very detailed, I'm afraid. What kind of
  performance problems are you experiencing? Slow serving? Thrashing?
  What are the symptoms?

A few shots in the dark:
- Have you tried running 'top' on that machine to check whether
  there's a process eating your CPU resources?
- Did you run hdaparm -tT to check the hard drive speed?
- Have you checked how much swap is used when you're experiencing the
  problems you mention?
