Ryan, Simon and Claudio -

Thanks much for all your help.

I finally prevailed this morning - whew.

Here is what I did:

Using gdisk, set the flag on /dev/sda1 to EF00
Format /dev/sda1 via gparted to 32bit vfat
Edit /etc/fstab to mount /dev/sda1 on /boot/efi [not sure how necessary
this was]
  * at this point I placed the essential files in /boot/efi/EFI/BOOT - this
did not work *
Run eliloconfig and answer Yes to remove previous entry.
This last step created /boot/efi/EFI/Slackware
and populated it with: elilo.efi (copied from /boot/elilo-x86_64.efi),
vmlinuz (copied from /boot/vmlinuz-huge-4.4.14) and a new elilo.conf

elilo.conf:

chooser=simple
delay=1
timeout=1
#
image=vmlinuz
        label=vmlinuz
        read-only
        append="root=/dev/sda2 vga=normal ro"

I removed all of the files I had copied and rebooted.
Voila.

Thanks again!
