well. Wild guess:
you might be low on memory. Evaluating the package
metadata is the most memory using part of yast, so it might just run
out of memory at that time.
Machine starting to freeze before yast crashes seems to point in that
direction.
If you already have a swap-partition on your hard-drive that is
not modified during install, you could try to switch to console 1
and activate it there.

No, SuSE doesn't (and you'll hardly find a machine with open nfs ports
on the net). That method involves a second machine that mirrors the
ftp-server and serves as NFS server locally.
