  ok, that seems to have worked.  i followed the instructions under
"Manual driver installation", built an rpm, installed, then followed
the straightforward instructions in
/usr/share/doc/packages/fglrx/README.SuSE, after which i rebooted to
the normal mode and ... voila.  full 1280x800 mode.  thanks muchly.

  and a followup question -- this mailing list seems pretty much dead.
most of the activity appears to be in the online forums, but i
personally prefer a mailing list like this.  does hardly anyone use
this list for SLE topics?
