bizarre system problem

A few weeks ago I spent some days ripping tracks off CDs and converting
them into MP3 files (so I could have a cd full of tracks to play without
interuption in the car on a long trip). Worked just fine!

Today I went to rip some more CDs and nothing worked. I'm using script
wrappers I wrote around cdda2wav and lame. Today cdda2wav gave various
errors, depending on how I tried to run it, but they boiled down to it
couldn't find a readable CD drive.  I've got two drives, and a few
weeks ago the same method worked on either of them, but now it won't
work on either.

Tried rebooting. No help. Tried specifying both of them as fake scsi
devices in /etc/grub.conf. NO help. After rebooting, ONE of them will
play an audio CD, and after a while (during which I attempted other
things with it) it won't.

Sounds like some kind of hardware problem, but it's weird. There was a
kernel update in the last few weeks, anyone suppose it may have had
something to do with it?
