I like protectbase a lot, with it I can arbitrarily choose any package to install from "unsafe" repos without having to fudge with config files. For instance, days ago I installed the new Gaim from dag -- all I had to do was "yum -f -y install gaim" and from now on gaim is out of the "untouchable elite" from the simple fact that the installed version is not from the "base" repos.
