Don't downgrade, 4's old and not supported. If it works fine else you
are on your own.

Just running 6 firefox's does not use 99% CPU, so what are they doing ?
If they use 99% memory your system IS working properly. It is supposed
to use all memory, not waste it by not using it.
If you are using SWAP you don't have enough RAM (again tricky: Putting
unused ram into SWAP is Good, swapping inuse RAM is Bad (for
performance)

Now the world gets tricky: For 1G RAM and over you should be running a
64 bit system. If you look technically how BIGRAM works you will see
that despite everyone's opinions whichever way 64bit is the only option.
This is especially true with ThinClients where simultainious apps are
running as opposed to 'lots of serial apps' which is better suited to
BIGRAM. 
So IMHO you do not give good reason for local apps. Hey it's your
system, you do what you like, I'm just arguing how-hard vs the-benefit 

Also to run local apps you will need to have 512M+ in each client.

LocalApps will happen, they are WIP. I tried because I wanted skype. In
the end a fat-client was easier.
