Traffic shaping establishes priorities for different types of traffic. For example, folks doing interactive work (e.g. ssh, http) along with bulk data traffic (e.g. ftp) generally want the interactive protocols to take priority. On the other hand, if there's no interactive traffic, they want the bulk data transfers to use as much of the line bandwidth as possible. One way to do this is using the "wondershaper" package.
