I've used Linux on my desktop since 1995, and the only system-wide crashes
I've had have been hardware-related (usually an untrapped media error,
or something getting confused after being reset/re-initiated too many
times). If one takes the trouble to get to the bottom of any recurring
crashes, then it's pretty easy to get a rock-solid workstation. Of course, I
believe that my firm preference for quality Intel motherboards helps here,
as they have a reputation of documenting their bugs better than the likes of
SiS, Via and friends (which in turn allows the production of better, more
reliable drivers). None of that should be construed as meaning that
stable AMD-based Linux systems are /impossible/ to build...
Of course, applications sometimes segfault and hang, but a quick ps and kill
is the most that's needed to sort that out.
