I have to agree. We've just been trying the latest Ximian Gnome, supposedly
user-friendly, and it:
 - doesn't update the file list in a Nautilus window when you create a new file
 - has terribly buggy menu editing
 - and, from the administrator point of view, has a very confusing system of .desktop
 files which makes account config replication a pain. (But I'm not sure if KDE
 is any better in that regard.)

GNOME just gives the impression to me of being overall less mature and less polished 
than KDE. (JMHO.)
