If the device does not appear in "smartctl --scan-open" output, you need 
to add an extra smartd.conf entry:

/dev/sdb -d megaraid,1 ...(remaining directives)...

MegaRAID device scanning is implemented in the Linux version of 
smartmontools >= 6.1.
