It actually depends on the mail account.  For IMAP accounts, for example, 
the search request is sent to the IMAP server, and it depends on how your 
IMAP server implements searches.  Ditto for news accounts.

For local mail folder searches, they are case insensitive.

Depends on the search type, again.

A search for a specific address hits an exact address only.

Try entering the search as a search on a generic header, and manually typing 
in the header's name (From/To/et al).  This will now be a generic text 
search.

Correct.  Only new messages get filtered.
