Two more comments after a few days of use.

3) Why is the status pane on the message window instead of staying on the main 
window?

4) Something changes in the way it behaves when you select multiple messages 
by dragging.  I think there's code in there somewhere that inhibits the 
display of the marked region that isn't getting called if the message display 
window is separate.
