Identifying attachment types by file name

I would like like exmh (or nmh) to recognize the file type of attachments a bit better. More and more of my mail seems to contain attachments that are MIME-type application/octet-stream when they are Word, Excel, images, or something else. This means that they can't quickly be opened, but must either be edited or saved to disk and then opened. Most apps, such as Firefox/Thunderbird, "guess" the MIME type from the file name. (.doc, .xls, .png, etc.), but exmh does not seem to so so. Is this something wrong in my configuration? Is there an reasonable way to make this work better? Something in my mailcap file, perhaps?
