Kevin: Exmh uses mime-magic. I have in my exmh-defaults:

*magic_lMicrosoft Office Document:		application/msword
*magic_lPDF document:      application/pdf
*magic_lPNG image data:      image/png

See the routine mime.tcl. There is a bug in it keeping it 
from working correctly. You can look up thread
