This has been tested by the community and test cases added by me. It should be stable by now, so you don't need to fear work unasked for. With Python3 support the community will be happy, and will not produce a new fork. Distro's will probably switch back to your fork. You will have time to work on your Python3-only total redesign. Regarding pull request vs patch: Most of OSS has moved to either github or gitlab. It would be easier for me and for the community in general to create pull requests.
