alternate ldap schema

I have a large existing ldap database. I would prefer to use what
currently exists and not have to move all my email users under the
o=hosting tree. Can I modify this through configuration files or is it
much more complicated than this? For example, would it be possible to
create mail users under the jvd tree by adding existing users in another
branch as uniqueUsers to the jvd? Thanks,
