Yes, that's a good point. OTOH, since I sent that first message I
discovered that on my laptop (running Debian testing), it passes the
earlier test but still hangs at the permanent failure test.

It would be useful to know if firewalls can affect these tests. I
thought they were only accessing localhost, but maybe there is some DNS
access?
