Would it be an option to use netcat/ncat/socat or rewrite the test in C
or some other language? Maybe shell is not the best environment for
doing this network tests at all... Do the test run in your testbed
without errors, if yes what's your shell? bash? Maybe Debian using dash
as /bin/sh is the problem in this case although I don't see any bashims
right now...
