I think I did/do know, but thanks for your offer of information
anyway.

Right.  That controls whether they show up in the configuration
screen.  But I was looking at the .pinerc file directly.  In order for
any of the hidden options to be set, they must show up in the .pinerc
file.

And in my case I was also not using IMAP because the mailbox is local,
even though functions in imap.c are executing (perhaps when they
should not be, I don't know).
