I assume that you mean that the IMAP server is creating the index file.
What is the difference in the behavior of pine, on the one hand, and the
others at the other hand?

And when pine tries to copy the mail, what is the response of the IMAP
server? With very small mail messages and tcpdump you might be able to
follow the communication between pine and the imap server, and compare
when the copying fails and when it succeeds.
