imap connection with pine

We've just installed a new system to act as a mail server. The new server no longer exports the mail spool area and we require users to connect via imap. The imap server is a dovecot server. The linux system is configured to be extremely secure. The question is that when pine opens on the clients there is a delay before prompting for username/password. Some type message comes up about an rsh connection failing. We aren't allowing rsh to this system. Is there a way to eliminate this so the users do not have to experience a time delay?
