IMAP and MailBox formats

Hi List,

I posted this to the google group but think it might better be
here as a more technical question. Any help appreciated... Also,
I started playing with Alpine yesterday, but everything in this
email still holds true.

I like to have my mail stored locally so that while I'm offline I have
access to it all. Pine has been working great and has been my
preferred email client for over a decade, but I *need* the ability to
search across multiple folders and multiple accounts... So I've
started using Apple Mail. Also, I think I'll be getting a 2nd
generation iPhone and I want it to integrate with my mail, not just
remote IMAP inboxes, but local folders too.

But I miss my Pine...

So, my solution is to run an imap server on 127.0.0.1. Pine and Apple
Mail can be used interchangably to check remote IMAP mailboxes, but
now rather than storing mail locally in their own formats (~/Library/
Mail/MailBoxes for Apple and ~/mail/ for pine) I'll store everything
'local' on the 127.0.0.1 IMAP server, so either client or the iPhone
can connect to that. Sounds good to me. If I'm missing something let
me know.

The problem is this... I enabled IMAP using Postfix Enabler. I can
connect to 127.0.0.1 as an IMAP server with both Pine and Apple mail.
But Pine cannot read the folders.

Postfix Enabler sets up the imap server to store folders in ~/Library/
Mail/[email protected]/<folders>  Each folder contains a group of
files for each message. I believe this is the MIX format and not MBOX,
but I'm not totally clear.

I can set Pine to access the local folders with this setup:

folder-collections=LocalIMAP {localhost/user=mankoff}/Users/mankoff/
Library/Mail/IMAP-mankoff@localhost/[],

I see the (MIX?) mailboxes from Apple Mail localhost imap storage, but
they are not presented in a coherent Pine fashion. It is more like I
am just browsing the filesystem.

How do I force pine to view the folders in MIX rather than MBOX
format, if that is the solution? If it is not the problem/solution,
can any one suggest a method to achieve this integration between Pine
and Apple Mail?
